The Paradise Lost map is a short revision of the original Quake DM-17 map. I wanted to design
something bright and open, perhaps because I was homesick for Florida beaches. I concepted a
Spanish-type fort on an island surrounded by bright blue ocean water. I feel the final map successfully realized that concept. The gameplay for this map is
strictly defined by the original DM-17 map, though I did add additional sniper posts.
I include this map in my portfolio not because it's an example of unique gameplay, but because I feel its a good example of my desire to build believable, interesting
game spaces. Playtesters commented that they spent as much or more time simply exploring the space as they did competing against each other. In fact, I recorded quite few players just
standing on the beach listing to the waves and looking out over the water.
